11/30/24 - Long time Vancouver broadcaster Russ Byth, who announced his impending retirement last month, delivered his final newscasts on Beach Radio CKQQ-FM 103.1  and The Lizard CKLZ-FM 104.7 Kelowna Friday. He worked at several Vancouver radio and TV stations during his career, most notably as morning business editor at 1130 NewsRadio CKWX Vancouver from 1996-2010.  RadioWest Posting

11/26/24 - The Ben Mulroney Show has been launched on Corus Entertainment AM news/ talk radio stations. It runs locally on CKNW AM 980 Vancouver from 6 to 8 p.m. weekdays. The national show replaces simulcasts of Global local and national newscasts on 'NW.  Connie Thiessen, Broadcast Dialogue

11/23/24 - Xwémalhkwu Hero Stories: A Graphic Novel, based on the traditional teachings of Homalco Nation elders has been released. 11/21/24 - Moira Wyton has left her position as a reporter/ associate producer for CBC Vancouver after a year and a half to join The Globe and Mail as an audience editor. She was previously a health reporter for The Tyee from 2020-23.

11/21/24 - Former Vancouver broadcaster Tarzan Dan Freeman is back on air following cancer treatments. He will do a few days a week until December when he will be back full time as  midday host on Bounce Radio Stations across Canada.  Milkman Unlimited Video

11/20/24 - Rogers Sports & Media audio division has cut JACK FM National Music Curator Terry Chan after almost 35 years with the company and Alex Carr has been released by SONiC CKKS-FM 104.9 Vancouver. 11/20/24 - Global BC Marketing & Community News Supervisor Johnny Mah has been presented with the Gina Steeves Annual Award for his dedicated support of the CKNW AM 980 Vancouver Kids’ Fund. 11/19/24 - Former Vancouver TV personality Randene Neill, who won the Powell River-Sunshine Coast seat for the NDP in the recent BC provincial election, has been appointed to the cabinet as the new minister of water, land and resource stewardship.  Coast Reporter

11/19/24 - Geri Mayer-Judson, who recently announced her departure from CKNW AM 980 Vancouver, has landed a new position. She joins STAR 95.9 CHFM-FM Calgary as an executive producer.  X Announcement

11/16/24 - Harpreet Pandher and Taqdeer Thindal will make history Sunday as the 2024 CFL Grey Cup will be broadcast in Punjabi for the first time in its 111 year history. It can be heard locally on Sher E Punjab Radio CKSP AM 600 Vancouver.  Global BC Video

11/16/24 - A GoFundMe page has been launched in support of Global BC ENG photographer Todd Gilchrist. A few weeks ago, he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), an aggressive form of cancer, and is being treated at Vancouver General Hospital.  GoFundMe Fundraiser

10/29/24 - The winners of the 2024 Webster Awards were announced last evening at a gala dinner/ awards event at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver.  The awards recognize excellence in journalism in B.C.  List of Winners

10/21/24 - Former Vancouver TV personality Randene Neill has won the Powell River-Sunshine Coast seat for the NDP in Saturday's BC provincial election. 10/21/24 - Former Vancouver newscaster Larry Sell passed away from a heart attack early Sunday (10/20) at age 82 in Laughlin, NV. He worked at several local stations from the early 1970s to the early 1990s before moving to Nevada where he worked at KNUU in Paradise in the late 1990s.  Radio West News

10/17/24 - Retired Vancouver sportscaster Jim Hughson is being inducted into the 2025 BC Sports Hall of Fame in the Media category. Additionally, former NHL Hockey player turned broadcaster Ray Ferraro is being inducted as an athlete. 10/15/24 - This date in 1984 marked the debut of the long-running Dan Russell Sportstalk radio show in its characteristic 10 p.m. time slot on CJOR Vancouver. It lasted for nearly 30 years until 2014 on CJOR (1984-88), CKWX (1988), CFMI (1989-97), CKNW (1997-2013) and CISL (2013-14).  X Posting

10/15/24 - Radio aficionado Dan Sys passed away Monday, October 14 at age 72 after a lengthy battle with cancer. 10/08/24 - Retired BCIT Associate Dean of Broadcasting Brian Antonson, whose 2007 book Slumach's Gold: In Search of a Legend has now sold over 14,400 copies...a Canadian best seller. It was written with his brother Rick along with Mary Trainer. Now the trio have penned a much expanded 2024 version, Slumach’s Gold In Search of a Legend—and a Curse. 10/07/24 -  Retired consumer advocate Ross McLaughlin has been honoured with an RTDNA Canada 2024 Regional Lifetime Achievement Award. He worked at stations in Edmonton and the US before joining CTV Vancouver to host McLaughlin on Your Side from 2015 until his retirement in 2022. 10/05/24 - News has been received from several sources that Vancouver broadcaster Doc Harris passed away around 10 this morning at Vancouver General Hospital. He was 76. It was just three days ago that it was reported he was undergoing a minor procedure.  Connie Thiessen, Broadcast Dialogue

10/03/24 - Former Vancouver TV cameraman Craig Lawrence died on September 1 at age 73, following a stroke and early onset Parkinson’s. The early 1970s BCIT Broadcast Program graduate was eventually promoted to Director of Photography at BCTV/ Global, a title he held until 2013. 10/02/24 - Iconic Vancouver broadcaster Doc Harris is in hospital following a successful minor procedure. Recovery time is expected to take a while. 9/27/24 - Comox Valley's locally-grown radio station, which identifies as CVOX, is looking to make the jump from online streaming to on-air FM broadcasting. 9/24/24 - WAVE 98.3 CIWV-FM Vancouver hosts Tara Jean and Stirling Faux are hosting a fundraiser for ALS research, saluting long time radio comrade and performer Julie Brown. 9/12/24 - Carly Meyers and Jay Brody of Carly & Jay have been released from p.m. drive on JACK CJAX-FM 96.9 Vancouver. They were previously part of the SONiC CKKS-FM 104.9 Vancouver lineup, before moving into the 4 - 8 p.m. time slot on JACK in April. Jason Manning now gets his early afternoon shift expanded to 2 - 6 p.m.

9/12/24 - Alison Broddle moves into a new position at CBC/ Radio-Canada as Senior Managing Director for B.C. She has been with The Corporation since 1992, most recently as Senior Director, Current Affairs and Investigative. 9/12/24 - CTV Vancouver is featuring award-winning Adam Sawatsky as the Sign-Off host at the end of its newscasts. It replaces The Last Word by the now retired Mike McCardell. Sawatsky has been a producer, reporter, and anchor at CTV News Vancouver Island for more than 20 years.  CTV News/ Video

9/11/24 - Vancouver Canucks radio broadcasts on Sportsnet 650 CISL will be grounded again this season with play-by-play being called from a studio locally in Vancouver. 9/06/24 - The non-profit Sooke Radio Society is getting closer to its first broadcast over the airwaves as a community radio station. John Vennavally-Rao


9/06/24 - Former Vancouver broadcaster John Vennavally-Rao has released some news about his absence from TV screens. Twelve months ago, following a routine colonoscopy, doctors discovered he had two completely separate cancers: rectal cancer and lung cancer. He says he is doing ok and has his sights set on returning to work. The 53 year old was a general assignment reporter at VTV/ CTV BC from 1997-2002, and is most recently a CTV National News Correspondent based in Toronto.  CTV News

9/06/24 - Liz Shorten, COO of the Canadian Media Producers Association, was among those awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal during a ceremony with B.C. Premier David Eby and B.C. Lieutenant Governor Janet Austin. Shorten was recognized for her outstanding commitment and dedication to the film, television and digital media sectors. Others from the B.C. media community recognized include Sp!ce Radio founder Shushma Datt, CKYE RED FM news director Harjinder Thind, South Asian NHL play-by-play commentator Randip Janda, journalist and TV commentator Guo Ding, and journalist Debbie Chen.

Obituary


9/06/24 - Global BC has announced the passing of two former staffers. Craig Lawrence died over the weekend from Parkinson’s. He had worked for BCTV/ Global BC as a Camera Operator. Another recent loss of note is Carlo Sgaetti. Many people work with his son Luca and may have also worked with Carlo during his time at Global BC and BCTV.

9/05/24 - Former Vancouver sportscaster Andrew Walker is making a return to radio waves with a new on-air position at Edmonton market Sports 1440 CKJR AM Wetaskiwin. 9/03/24 - Former All Traffic CKGO AM 730 Vancouver morning anchor Jeff Jeffries has started Twitch Traffic to help commuters get through Vancouver's morning traffic rush, weekdays 6 to 10 a.m.  Corus Entertainment shut down the all traffic format on June 26th, replacing it with a simulcast of CKNW AM 980X Posting

8/31/24 - After a 62-year career, Mike McCardell has retired with his final The Last Word on CTV Vancouver. His final farewell came from the PNE, where he has originated numerous segments over the years.  CTV News

8/29/24 - George Lee is retiring from Fairchild Media Group after 29 years. He started his career with Fairchild Radio Vancouver in 1995 as a program host, and worked his way up to President of Fairchild Media Group, overseeing four radio stations and five channels across the country.

8/29/24 - Angelina Rai has joined Virgin Radio CHBE-FM 107.3 Victoria in afternoon drive. She has most recently been presenting traffic and weather on CTV Morning Live Vancouver.

5/30/24 - Sher E Punjab CKSP AM 600 Vancouver and the B.C. Lions have partnered up for the upcoming Canadian Football season to broadcast the game in Punjabi. The first game is this Friday, May 31. Willows stepped away from the station in March following a recurrence of a rare ocular cancer he battled 20 years ago. 5/03/24 - Veteran Vancouver broadcaster Jody Vance has been inducted into the RPM Hall of Fame. The RPM Lunch, which was started by Red Robinson over two decades ago, is a regular lunchtime gathering of radio personalities, and continues to this day following Red's passing on April 1 last year at age 86. 1/26/24 - Former Vancouver and Victoria broadcaster Tarzan Dan Freeman has announced he is leaving his current weekend positions at Boom CHBM-FM 97.3 Toronto and XL 103.1 CFXL-FM Calgary for something new. 1/14/24 - The Zone CJZN-FM 91.3 Victoria morning co-host Dylan Willows returns to the airwaves following a five-week break brought on by a diagnosis of cancer that occurs in the tissues of the eye. 1/12/24 - Victoria-based marine biologist Sarika Cullis-Suzuki has officially debuted as co-host of The Nature of Things with Toronto’s Anthony Morgan on CBC Television. 1/11/24 - Long-time CBC Vancouver reporter Renée Filippone has been named Managing Editor of Daily News at the Vancouver bureau. She's held several positions since joining CBC, following her graduation from the Broadcast Journalism program at BCIT in 2006. Filippone succeeds Tinnie Chow, who left her position as Senior Manager for News and Programs in October.

1/10/24 - Former CBC Vancouver staffer John Kirkup passed away December 4, 2023 at age 86. He joined the Corporation's Finance Department in 1973 and later worked in other departments including Feature Film Procurement and Syndicated Programming on CBUT during the '70s and '80s, retiring in 1998 after 25 years service. 1/09/24 - 40+ year Vancouver broadcast veteran Alan Waterman has been appointed to the Board of Directors at Honour House, a refuge for members of the Canadian Armed Forces, Veterans, Emergency Services Personnel and their families to stay while receiving medical care and treatment. Waterman worked in several roles at CBC Vancouver from 1977 to 2016 and more recently has been a freelance mobile journalism & video journalism trainer.  X Posting

Scott Fee

1/06/24 - After a brief break from the news industry, former CHEK-TV Victoria News Director Scott Fee is returning to produce and anchor CHEK’s weekend newscast. He left Vancouver Island to anchor at Global Calgary, but returned to CHEK as the station’s ND in 2019, a position he held until 2023. His first newscast will be Saturday January 13. Fee replaces Hannah Lepine who left CHEK in December to return home to Calgary to be closer to family, joining CTV Calgary as a reporter and producer.  CHEK News

George Sumyie
1/04/24 - AM broadcast transmitter maintenance and repair expert George Sumyie passed away at Eagle Ridge Hospital in Port Moody December 9, 2023 at age 84. He worked for Vancouver-based Broadcast Technical Services until retirement in 2000. He also co-owned and established CKLQ AM 1570 Brandon, MB in 1977. Neil Morrison

1/04/24 - Former Vancouver broadcaster Neil Morrison, who announced last February that broadcasting was no longer in his future, has joined Mix 107.9 CKBT-FM Fort Saskatchewan, AB in p.m. drive. He is best known locally for his time at CFOX FM 99.3 Vancouver from 2004-14 following 15+ years in Toronto radio.

1/01/24 - Border station KVOS-TV Bellingham has added Spanish language Univision on its primary 12.1 channel, moving Heroes and Icons to sub-channel 12.8. With its transmitter on Mt. Constitution on nearby Orcas Island, KVOS provides a near-local signal to many parts of Vancouver, Victoria and southwest BC.
